  • Things to see in Vitoria in a day

The first option takes you to the Museum of Fine Arts, where an excellent collection of art from the XIX and XX centuries is on display. If you continue through this area you will reach the Ajuria Enea Palace which is the official residence of the Lehendakari or the Basque president.

The second option takes you to the Mary Immaculate Cathedral (Catedral de María Inmaculada) or new cathedral (neo-Gothic) and its green areas. And right next door you can get some fresh air in Park Florida.

Continue down Prado street to experience the hustle and bustle of Vitoria as you’ll reach the city’s most popular meeting point: the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. Here you’ll find the monument commemorating the Battle of Vitoria in 1813, where Napoleon lost in his last attempt to conquer Spain. Here you will also find the famous Vitoria-Gasteiz grass sculpture.

Very close to the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is the Saint Michael’s Church (Iglesia de San Miguel), from here you can go to either the old cathedral or the Artium Museum of Modern Art.

In the Gothic temple of Saint Mary of Vitoria (Santa María de Vitoria), in Gothic style, you can relive the second part of ‘The pillars of the Earth’ and some novels by Pérez-Reverte, Saramago and Coelho. And on your return home you can pass by the medieval wall.

  • Eating in Vitoria

One of the reasons tourists flock to Vitoria each year is to sample the world famous Basque cuisine. Here are some ideas to help you choose where to eat in Vitoria.

The Ikea is one of the best restaurants in Vitoria and the province. The Zaldiaran restaurant also stands out for the quality of its meats and has a Michelin star.

If you’re looking for a vegetarian option then El Parral is the restaurant for you in Vitoria as it specializes in vegetarian food. You can even find some vegan dishes in its daily special offers. And if you are travelling with children, La Pintozzeria, where you can enjoy artisan wood-oven pizzas, is recommended. A children’s menu is also available.

Another way to eat more informally while immersing yourself in Basque culture is by walking the streets of the city from bar to bar and eating pintxos. There are several companies that organise tours of the area, including tastings of pintxos and Rioja wines.
